Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale was often referred to as 'The lady with the Lamp.' She would walk her rounds at night after everyone else retired for the evening. She was instrumental in the Crimean War by reducing the death rate from 42% to 2%. She set the standards that lead to modern day nursing. The nurses uniform was derived from a nun's habit. Head nurses in England are referred to as 'Sister'. The nurses buckle, (originally used for a cape) is still worn by nurses in England.
